Sound familiar?
On Dallas County's steep, rocky hills, a gravel lane turns into a creek bed every time it storms.
- Rain runs straight down the tire tracks and leaves a trench of bare rock and chert.
- Two-wheel-drive cars spin out on the climb up from the low water crossing.
- Hauling more gravel each spring only buys a few months before it washes downhill again.
Local conditions
Ozark hollows along the Niangua
Dallas County sits in rugged Ozark hill country, with deep wooded hollows cut by the Niangua River and the creeks that feed it. The ground is thin and stony, with cherty clay over limestone and dolomite, so rock pokes up through many lanes. Steep grades send stormwater racing downhill, which strips loose gravel fast. Pasture and hay ground fill the flatter ridge tops, and many homes sit at the end of long private drives. Summers are hot and humid, and winters swing above and below freezing again and again.
What we see most in Dallas County
Gullies down the tire tracks
On a steep lane, water finds the wheel ruts and turns them into ditches. Each storm cuts them deeper until a car drags bottom.
Rock showing through
Thin soil means bedrock and big chert chunks work their way up to the surface. They rattle trucks and chew up tires.
Soft spots at the bottom
Water gathers where the lane levels out near a creek or pond. That stretch stays muddy long after the hill has dried.
Driveways in town wearing out
Around the county seat, older asphalt drives have cracked and pulled apart with age. Many are ready for a fresh layer on a firm base.
The solution
Hill Lanes Done Right
Getting up your own lane shouldn't feel like a gamble after a storm.
When you live back a long drive in these hills, that lane is your link to town, work and school. Watching it wash out again is frustrating, and it gets costly too. We hear the same story from folks all over this part of the Ozarks.
Our family owned and operated business has spent 15 years laying chip seal and asphalt. Farm roads, ranch lanes, home driveways, parking lots and RV parks are the work we know best. Each job comes with a 1 year warranty on what we did.
We'll leave you a lane that holds its shape and gives your tires grip, at a reasonable price.

What you get
Traction on the Climb
Stone-textured chip seal top
The embedded stone gives tires a bite on steep stretches, even when it's damp. Driving home in the family car gets a lot less stressful.
Water Off the Lane
Shaped surface and edges
We set the lane so water sheds off the side instead of running down the middle. That's the key to stopping gullies on these grades.
Less Upkeep Each Year
Sealed, locked-in stone
Once the stone is sealed, it stays put far better than loose gravel. You can spend weekends on something besides raking rock back uphill.

Our recommendation
On a steep or winding lane out in the hills, chip seal is usually our first suggestion, because its rough top grips well and it covers long runs without the cost of full paving. If you live in Buffalo or another town and want a clean, smooth drive, asphalt is the better fit. Either way, we'll check the slope and where the water goes at your free on-site estimate.

FAQ
Dallas County questions
Still have questions? Call (816) 375-1940. We pick up.
Can chip seal go on a really steep lane?+
It often works well on steep lanes because the stone top gives good traction. Very steep pitches or sharp curves need careful planning so the surface holds. We'll look at your grade in person and tell you what we think.
Will the rock and chert in my lane cause trouble?+
Rocky ground can make a strong base if it is shaped and packed well. Big loose chunks near the top are the bigger issue. We'll point out anything that needs attention at the estimate.
Do you go out to properties near the Niangua River?+
Yes, we work on cabin drives, farm lanes and homes all over the county, including along the river. Long, remote drives are a normal job for us.
I have a house in Urbana and a farm lane outside town. Can you do both?+
Yes. Lots of people need asphalt for one and chip seal for the other. We can look at both on one visit and give you a quote for each.
How do the freeze and thaw winters here affect a lane?+
Water that gets into cracks freezes, expands and breaks the surface apart a little more each time. Good drainage and a sealed top keep most of that water out. That's why we pay close attention to slope and edges.
